Knowing the Odds
Most people believe that casino games are largely about luck and that, ultimately, there’s no way you can win. Now, whilst the above statement is right to a certain extent – there is undeniably an element of luck involved, as the old truism goes: the best players make their own luck, and if you know how, you can too.
Any casino, whether it’s one of the big ones in Las Vegas, or an online casino like Sky Vegas, offers casino games that are based on how a dice, or cards, or a wheel spins. Slot machines are, in fact, the only game that is completely random, which is why people who are really good at gambling look on them as a bit of fun.
Consider a dice game, there are 36 different ways that the dice can fall, but as the highest combination is 12 (two sixes) and the lowest is 2 (two ones), the remaining 34 options all have to be concentrated into that gap of 11. This means that some numbers have to be more likely to come out than others.
As it happens, seven is the most likely number, because it can come out in six different combinations. So, exactly 1/6th of the time you have the chance that a seven will come up, whilst these might seem like slender odds, you can already see how a knowledge of the odds can tilt the game in your favour.
When considering cards things become a little more complicated. There are 52 cards in a pack, and sometimes casinos play with more than one, however, the odds are still fairly easy to work out. If you’re playing blackjack, for example, you can usually see several other cards, and you know what you need to make 21, a quick bit of calculation, and you’ll soon know whether it’s right to stick or twist in any situation.
The same applies to poker, but it becomes more complicated because there are so many different solutions to a hand. Nonetheless, knowing how the odds work out is important, because it helps you decide how much you should bet in any given situation – and you should always bet according to your odds of winning, rather than to what’s going on in front of you. The best way to learn poker odds is to use a poker calculator, once you’ve set up a few hands, you’ll soon learn some of the basic situations are, and your odds of winning with a certain hand.
As mentioned above, most casino games are simply down to how different numbers work out, so if you learn how to quickly calculate probability, you’ll vastly improve your chances of winning in any given situation.
